On Friday July 16th 2010 the Hackensack NJ Fire Department responded to 300 Prospect Ave on a reported structural collapse. Companies found a 3 story sub-level parking garage completely "pancake" collapsed onto itself. UASI (Urban Area Security Initiative) USAR (Urban Search and Rescue) units from Paterson, Newark, Morristown, NHRFR, and Jersey City responded to the scene to assist with search and rescue for reported missing occupants. NJ State Police Office of Emergency Management's "NJTF-1" was also dispatched to the scene.
Within several hours, primary searches were conducted as much as structural access and conditions would allow. NJTF-1 K-9 and NJ State Police ODU North (Troop-B) K-9 units conducted searches as well. Investigation with use of building security cameras indicated that two (2) vehicles may have been occupied at the time of collapse thus requiring more in depth searches.
Within a few short hours a small city was created along Prospect Ave. This included a full blown EMS sector, Rehab operations in lobbies of neighboring apartment buildings, shoring and cutting stations, Unified Command Tent, and various other stating areas. The operation ran extremely smooth from the life saving searches to placement of garbage cans.
