Sizing & Frames

UNDERSTANDING SIZES AND WHY I OFFER WHAT I DO

For years, 8x10 has been synonymous with “enlargements”. However, that is kind of considered “old school” now. Think of it like this, an “aspect ratio” of 4:3 is the “old school” version of your television before wide screens came out. Now, as you can see in any electronic store and even with computer monitors, everyone wants wide screen. That “aspect ratio” is 16:9. Now if you watch the same movie on both TV’s at the same time, you’ll notice that you’re missing a lot on the “old school” one. Well, that all holds true for photography!

You see, most people, especially amateurs, aren’t thinking of “filling the frame” when they take the actual photo. So, they rely on either post-processing or cropping to fix that problem. That is where an 8x10 comes in. By enlarging a photo to an 8x10, you can take a subject and trim the empty space off the sides and make it look all nice.

However here’s the difference with MY photos. When I shoot, I shoot to fill the frame at time of picture not afterwards. Therefore, my thought is ALWAYS give the client a “wide screen” or “Hi-Def” version of the pic. Why order a photo and lose 2 inches when you can have the whole thing! So, with that, I now ONLY OFFER 8x12 prints and NOT 8x10’s!

This removes the worry of cropping the wrong inch off the wrong side. Also removes any confusion and really, you ALWAYS get a good enlargement!

Now, if you want bigger sizes, you’ll also notice that I do not offer the 11x14 size. Why? Because believe it or not the correct enlargement would be 10x15!, same thing with bigger sizes, I offer 16x24, and 20x30.
