On Friday, April 17th 2009 the Paterson NJ Fire Department responded to 108 Mill Street on a reported fire. Engine 7 reported smoke visible while enroute to the scene and then a working fire upon arrival. Deputy Chief 2 arrived confirming the working fire and reported a basement fire in a 3sty attached multiple dwelling. As companies began advancing lines, smoke became visible on the upper floors and cockloft. With the only working hydrant on the block in use by engine 7 and severe exposures, a 2nd alarm was requested.
Before 2nd alarm companies could arrive, heavy smoke began to show from the cockloft of both exposure buildings. A 3rd alarm was called as companies were pulled from the main fire building. Rapidly deteriorating conditions allowed the fire to advance through 5 buildings before exposure lines could maintain the spread.
Extensive mutual aid was required to maintain 4 tower ladders, 2 deck guns, and numerous outside hand lines before the fire could be placed u/c. A total of 3 firefighters were injured during the event. None reported to be serious.
