08-11-10 - Newark 5th Alarm - South 20th St & Ferdinand St
On Wednesday, August 11th 2010 the Newark NJ Fire Department responded to Box-1542, South 20th St at the corner of Ferdinand St for a reported fire. Responding companies reported smoke showing from a distance. On arrival quickly transmitted a 2nd alarm when confronted with a fully involved 3sty 60x35 vacant multiple dwelling. Fire was already extending into surrounding exposures as firefighters battled not only flames but dead hydrants and downed wires. <p> The fire extended to a 3sty vacant dwelling, a 2sty vacant frame, a 2nd 3sty vacant dwelling, and jump the street to a 3sty occupied multiple dwelling. The fire reached a 5th alarm with assistance from several mutual aid departments called to the scene. Numerous firefighters were treated and several transported, all for heat related injuries.
